EBE solutions is becoming
EBE Railway Systems

 

We already announced it in the last issue, and now we are sending out the first Level-X – it is already the 15th issue – with our new logo.

The changeover of our logo heralds the transformation from EBE Solutions to EBE Railway Systems, and the entire rollout will take place over the coming weeks.  With the revised, clear appearance, we want to position ourselves as an innovative provider of railway solutions in line with our self-image and thus take account of a development that has been accompanying EBE for some time: Towards becoming a provider of technical and digital infrastructure for all types of rail transport. The new, revised image reflects this, but we want to retain the tried and tested.

The striking green colour continues to be part of our corporate identity and stands for the green of the landscapes in which many of our facilities are located. You can read about the extent to which digital processes are now networking our solutions for railway crossings and interlockings, even ‘on greenfield sites’, in our detailed article in the Tech Talks series.
Hopefully you will be able to experience our new design for yourself at Innotrans in Berlin, where I look forward to welcoming you to the EBE stand. Look out for the black and green EBE stand!

Digital Railway Solutions

In this fifth edition of our EBE Techtalks, we present the digital solutions from EBE Railway Systems.

Thanks to the consistent use of IP-based network components right from the start, all our systems can be used for digital networking from the outset.

The protocols developed for this in the last 10 years now range from standardised protocols, such as RaSTA for the use of EULYNX, to specially developed protocols, which enable uncomplicated connection to different systems. We have already gained a lot of experience with various network technologies and have optimised the communication algorithms as a result. This enables a range of applications, one of which we would like to present today as an example – ISMO (ISIS Monitoring & Diagnostic).

Many of our railway crossing safety systems (EKSA) are integrated into our digital ISMO network, which is used by some customers purely for maintenance and by others for remote operational monitoring. Communication between the ISMO control centre and the safety systems is both wired and wireless. The ISMO control centre consists of a remote monitoring computer, mobile routers and the security equipment (e.g. firewall). The security-orientated protocol used has been specially adapted for the use of mobile radio. Comprehensive, independent security measures have been taken to secure the network, supported by risk analyses and organisational measures in accordance with current standards and legal requirements.

The information transmitted includes secure status queries, the transmission of commands, diagnostic data and system logs. The data can either be forwarded to other safety systems or displayed on graphical user interfaces. The user interface can be used on any Windows-based PC, tablet or separate operating unit. EBE works with partner companies to ensure the reliable operation and continuous expansion of the network.

Digital networking and the utilisation of existing public communication infrastructures offer enormous potential for us and our customers. The reduction of expensive excavation and cable laying work, the collection of diagnostic data to optimise maintenance and the support / ‘remote support’ of operating and maintenance personnel by experts are just some of the benefits already enjoyed. The further expansion of mobile communications and increasing digitalisation will open up many more areas of application.

The northernmost railway crossing safety system in Austria was built by EBE Railway Systems

 

The northernmost level crossing protection system in Austria

There is a group on Facebook with the telling name ‘Litschau und Umgebung ... really right at the top’. It’s a fitting name as Litschau is the northernmost town in Austria.

This makes the installation on the Waldviertelbahn line between Gmünd and Litschau the most northerly level crossing protection system installation.

The system, which is technically protected by road traffic signals, was put into operation in June and has since ensured reliable and effective protection of the level crossing near the terminus of the Waldviertel railway. We are now working on equipping the other three points of the compass with our systems so that we may also be able to present the easternmost, westernmost and southernmost EKSA in the future.

‘Under pressure. The history of the train toilet‘

The DB Museum is literally taking a look beyond the toilet: until 4 May 2025, the special exhibition ’Under pressure. The history of the train toilet’. In eight themed areas with around 150 exhibits, documents and photographs, the development of the train toilet from its beginnings in the 19th century to the present day is highlighted. Exhibits include the chamber pot from Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s saloon car and original and miniature toilets.

Exhibition ‘Railway Stations – Stations in Europe’
in Vienna’s Ringturm

The show in the exhibition centre in the Ringturm is dedicated to 200 years of European architectural and cultural history with a special focus on railway stations as passenger reception buildings. It takes visitors on a fascinating journey to buildings in London, Paris, Helsinki, Tbilisi, Sofia, Belgrade, Skopje as well as Rome, Florence and Venice, Ostrava-Vitkovice and Pardubice.
